Arun Kumar Sinha calls for shift from rhetoric to concrete action for sustainable future

"The time has come to shift from rhetoric to concrete action for a sustainable future", said Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary (Forest, Environment & Climate Change), Government of Manipur.
Arun Kumar Sinha made the statement today during the official release function of the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Government of Manipur's Environment Calendar 2026, held at the office of the Directorate.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Arun Kumar said that the Environment Department observes several important environmental days throughout the year, beginning from World Wetlands Day in February to International Mountain Day in December.
Stating that most months in the calendar are themed around important environmental observances, he added "The January page showcases the Dzuko Valley of Manipur, highlighting its natural body during the winter season.
The February page features a hill water body in Tamenglong District.
In March, the calendar depicts the natural flow of the Barak River.
The April page highlights the beauty of spring.
The month of May showcases migratory birds across wetlands, and so on".
He also informed that the department has delineated about 71 wetlands in the State, of which three wetlands have been officially notified and four are currently undergoing rejuvenation works.
He continued that the Department has already mapped more than 1,000 springs across the State.
"Out of these, 173 critical springs in Ukhrul and Noney districts have been taken up for revival under a pilot scheme", he added.
The Principal Secretary also mentioned that the time has come to turn words into action for achieving a sustainable future.
He emphasized that these efforts are meant to safeguard the interests of future generations and highlighted the crucial role of the media in this regard.
He said that while the government is undertaking various initiatives, it is equally important for the media to inform people about the challenges being faced in the conservation of water bodies, forests, and other natural resources essential for sustaining life on the planet.
He urged the media to disseminate information on existing dangers, challenges, and the steps being taken by the government for the benefit of future generations.
He stressed that springshed management is particularly important in the hill areas, as many springs are drying up due to deforestation and unscientific land use.
He informed that the Government of India has allocated a budget of Rs 2,700 crore for springshed management across the country, and several such works are being undertaken in different regions.
Referring to Manipur, he stated that landslides and water scarcity have become major issues due to road construction and the drying up of springsheds.
Pointing out that the department has already initiated the.
rejuvenation of the Imphal River, he emphasized' that collective responsibility is essential to ensure that natural resources are preserved and conserved for future generations.
He added that afforestation and sustainable use of natural resources cain support livelihoods while protecting the environment.
Furthermore, Arun Kumar Sinha appealed to all stakeholders to work together to preserve the environment so that future generations are not left to lament the depletion of natural resources.
Dr T Brajakumar Singh, Director, Environment & Climate Change, Government of Manipur also attended the function as the president, along with other officials and staff of the Directorate.
