Eye Donation Fortnight observed at Chandel District Hospital

The National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB), District Health Society, Chandel, observed Eye Donation Fortnight at District Hospital, Chandel, on Friday under the theme, "Let Your Eyes Live On".
As part of the observance, a one-day free eye check-up camp was organised, offering cataract screening, distribution of presbyopic spectacles and free medicines.
A total of 117 patients attended the camp, during which 70 presbyopic glasses were distributed.
Screening also identified 13 cataract cases and three pterygium cases for further treatment.
The programme was attended by Chief Medical Officer, Chandel, Dr Joyson Mathew Monsang, as the chief guest; Medical Superintendent of District Hospital, Chandel, Dr Serbum Shakchung Moyon, as the guest of honour; and District Nodal Officer, NPCB, Dr Leishangthem Rita Chanu, as the functional president.
In her keynote address, Dr Rita Chanu highlighted the importance of eye donation and explained that eyes can be donated after death with the consent of family members.
She noted that the eyes must be retrieval within six hours of death, making immediate contact with an eye bank essential.
She also said that any person above 18 years of age can pledge to donate their eyes, irrespective of age, sex, religion, blood group or existing health and eye conditions.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Joyson Mathew Monsang urged the public to come forward for eye donation, stating that it restores light, hope and livelihood not only to visually impaired individuals but also to their families.
Dr Serbum Shakchung Moyon also encouraged people to embrace eye donation as a noble act and to "let the eyes five on".
An eye donation pledge was administered during the programme.
The fortnight-long campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage more people across Chandel district to pledge eye donation, contributing to the reduction of comeal blindness.
