Imphal, May 15 2026:
After an exchange/release of both Naga and Kuki hostages took place today, the People's Movement for Peace & Development (PMPD), Manipur has appealed to the Government to secure the release of the remaining hostages.
PMPD has also urged the Government to launch intensive precautionary measures to ensure that incidents such as the deadly double-ambush of May 13 at Kangpokpi and Noney districts do not recur.
Notably, PMPD is an organisation constituted five months ago with Meetei, Meetei-Pangal and Naga members.
Speaking to the media at Zeliangrong Union Office located at Kakhulong, Imphal, PMPD convenor Singaimayum Jalal strongly condemned the fatal ambush between Kotzim and Kotlen area in Kangpokpi around 10 am on May 13 which took the lives of three Church leaders and left multiple others injured as well as the second ambush in the evening at Joujangtek, killing an innocent farmer and causing grievous injuries to a couple.
Out of the 38 individuals who were abducted following the ambushes, at least 28 have been released today.
However, many individuals are still being held captive, he said.
Condemning such an unfortunate turn of events, he urged both communities to exercise restraint and act responsibly to avoid intensification of violence.
On behalf of PMPD, SM Jalal urged the leaders of the two communities and the public to bring about a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
Saying the release of the 28 hostages is an encouraging development, he appealed to the leaders of both communities to take all possible steps to facilitate the release of the remaining hostages.
The fact that no group from any community has claimed responsibility for the incidents shows that the ambushes were carried out by "covert terrorists" .
Not taking responsibility for the killings is an act of cowardice, he added.
The Government should uncover the truth about the ambushes and urge the Central Government to launch intense surveillance of the incident sites.
Highlighting the need for deployment of adequate security, he demanded justice for the victims.
Lastly, Jalal made a call for peace and restraint, urging both communities to focus on ensuring an end to such hostilities.
