Kakching, November 11 2025:
Normal life in Kakching district came to a standstill today following an indefinite bandh called by various civil society organisations of Kakching in protest against the authorities' failure to repair the damaged stretch of NH-137(A) passing through Kakching district.
During the bandh, large numbers of people came out to the streets and blocked major roads, including Kakching Keithel and Kakching Lamkhai, disrupting vehicular movement.
Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, also remained closed for the day.
School van drivers and several local organisations extended their full support to the bandh.
Meanwhile, government authorities have initiated steps to begin repair work on the damaged portion of the highway starting today, following the public outcry.
Speaking to the media, Kakching Bazar Business Welfare Association president Yengkhom Rajendra stated that even though repair works have commenced, the bandh will continue until visible progress is made.
He added that the construction work will be closely monitored by local representatives and civil society organisations till tomorrow to ensure proper quality and timely completion.
He further mentioned that a joint meeting with the civil society groups will be convened tomorrow evening to review the progress of the construction.
The decision on whether to continue or relax the bandh will be made based on the outcome of the meeting.
Rajendra added that the bandh would be relaxed for educational institutions to resume normal classes, but restrictions on normal commercial and transport activities will remain in force until satisfactory progress is achieved.
