Thoubal joins pro-LIPS protest

Thoubal district remained literally shut today while protesters attempted to storm the Thoubal residence of Chief Minister O Ibobi and the residence of Wangjing-Tentha AC MLA P Brojen at Wangjing.
Protest rallies were held at many places in Thoubal district demanding withdrawal of Manipur Regulation of Visitors, Tenants and Migrant Workers (MRVTMW) Bill 2015 and fitting action against police personnel involved in the killing of a student protester at Imphal yesterday.
Thoubal bazar, Wangjing bazar, Yairipok bazar, Kakching bazar and Wabagai bazar remained closed since early morning.
Autorickshaw and Magic passenger vehicles stayed off the road.
At around 1 pm, students of Progressive English School, Lamding and meira paibis of Wangjing area staged a sit-in at Wangjing bazar.
Later, the protesters attempted to storm the residence of Wangjing Tentha AC MLA P Brojen located at Wangjing Wangkhei.
The attempt was foiled by police personnel.
The protesters then staged a roadblock at Wangjing bazar by burning tyres on the road.
Meantime, students of KM Blooming Higher Secondary School, New Public Higher Secondary and Wisdom Foundation, Khangabok staged a march towards Thoubal DC office.
However, a team of police turned them back from the gate of the DC complex.
The protesters raised slogans on the road at Thoubal Athokpam Keithel.
Later, the students attempted to storm the residence of the Chief Minister at Thoubal.
However, police personnel who were on guard at the CM's residence, along with additional police force led by the district SP, foiled the attempt.
The students were sent back to their respective schools.
People in large number turned up and staged a roadblock on Arong bridge by burning tyres.
A rally was also staged in Khangabok area demanding implementation of ILP and punishment against police personnel involved in the killing of a student.
Members of SWC Khangabok Khulakpam Leikai, UYC Khangabok Meisnam Leikai and Lainingthou Club, Khangabok Mayai Leikai took part in the rally.
At Kakching, markets and shops remained closed since early morning.
Volunteers of Students' Wing JCILPS staged roadblocks at various places.
They burned tyres at Kakching Lamkhai.
Shops from Kakching Lamkhai to Pallel remained closed.
Staff and students of Padma Ratna English School, Kakching staged a sit-in at the school premises against the killing of the student.
Meira paibis of Wabagai, Hiyanglam, Lamjao, Wabagai Lamkhai staged a sit-in at Wabagai Lamkhai today.
At the same time, JCILPS Jiribam branch has burned the effigies of Chief Minister, Dy CM and Education Minister today at Jiribam Lamkhai bazar, reports our correspondent.
