Manipur reaffirms commitment to biodiversity & sustainability
as World Environment Day events draw thousands from across State

World Environment Day 2026 was observed across Manipur on Friday under the UN theme "Inspired by Nature' For Climate, For Our Future" .
From universities and hospitals to schools, security forces, and civil society groups, institutions statewide marked the day with mass plantation drives, clean-up campaigns, and awareness programmes, calling for sustained action beyond symbolic observance.
Educational and Research Institutions
The Department of Environmental Science and NSS Cell, Manipur University, organised a "Mission LIFE: Lifestyle for Environment" programme behind the Department of Anthropology.
Vice-Chancellor (i/c) Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam urged youth to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles.
Prof R S Khoiyangbam and Prof Laishram Santosh Singh coordinated the event with Registrar Prof M Premjit Singh and Finance Officer Prof Laishram Rajendrakumar Singh.
Faculty, NSS volunteers, and students joined a plantation drive.
Dhanamanjuri University's Environmental Science Department and NSS Cell, DM College of Science, held a poster competition drawing 55 entries and ceremonially watered the Uningthou tree in lieu of lighting candles.
VC Prof W Chandbabu Singh stressed year-round environmental practice.
Dr Rebika Soibam Chanu advocated planting four saplings for every tree felled, while Dr Waikhom Roshan Singh highlighted rising temperatures and biodiversity loss.
Prizes were awarded and saplings planted.
The Centre for Myanmar Studies, MU, in collaboration with Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) Manipur, conducted a "Bamboo for Life" programme, planting Wa-Bo and Utang bamboo under Prof M C Arunkumar.
The initiative underscored bamboo's role in climate resilience and cross-border ecological ties.
Organisers called for action over rhetoric.
ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, along with KVKs of Imphal West, Thoubal, Chandel, Churachandpur, and Ukhrul, planted 430 saplings at Lamphelpat and Langol Farm.
Centre Head Dr Soibam Basanta Singh urged sustained protection of natural resources.
Khongnangthaba University's Eco-Chapter and Science Club, together with the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, conducted a Plastic Collection Drive and Tree Plantation Programme.
VC Prof Naorem Joykumar Singh said universities must nurture ecological responsibility.
Speakers Jiten Yumnam and Dr.Gurumayum Amarjit Sharma linked environmental issues with justice and regional climate concerns.
Central Agricultural University, Imphal, and its constituent colleges and Krishi Vigyan Kendras carried out extensive plantation drives across campuses and adjoining areas under Vice-Chancellor Dr Anupam Mishra.
Faculty, students, scientists, officers, staff, and local stakeholders participated.
