Imphal, June 12 2026:
Director of Environment and Climate Change, Manipur, Dr Tourangbam Brajakumar, has stressed the urgent need to introduce climate science to students to build awareness among the younger generation about the growing environmental crisis.
Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of the special DD Quiz Time, organised by Doordarshan Kendra Imphal with support from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change to mark World Environment Day, Dr Brajakumar said human actions in pursuit of comfort have triggered consequences now turning into threats.
He noted that the delicate balance between humans and nature is worsening.
"The way climate is changing raises questions on how long humanity can survive on Earth", he said.
While global forums like COP had agreed to keep warming within 1.5C, the threshold was breached in 2024, forcing a new target of below 2C.Continued rise, he warned, could lead to human extinction.
In Manipur, once-perennial rivers and lakes are drying up, and districts like Noney and Kangpokpi have recorded temperatures above 40C.If trends persist, 50C in these areas "would not be surprising", he said.
He also cited reports that one species is lost every three minutes, adding urgency to act now.
Dr Brajakumar urged that "climate change" be reframed as "climate science" in curricula to equip students with solutions.
Eight students were felicitated as winners of the quiz: Adarsh Pheiroijam of Millennium Institute of Science; Taorem Malemnganbi of Sacred Heart Hr Sec School; Aditi Nongmaithem of Nirmalabas High School; and Khomdram Lanchenbi, Thiyam Manimatum, Laishram Nganba, Ghana Loubuktongbam, and Khomdram Chinglenba from Slopeland Public School.
Senior officials of DDK Imphal also attended the event.
