Students sensitised on Sangai conservation at Kakching

Kakching, June 25 2026:
A one-day school students sensitisation programme on Sangai Day was successfully conducted at the School Auditorium of Padma Ratna English School (PRES), Kakching, with the objective of creating awareness among students about the conservation of the endangered Sangai deer, environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.
The programme was jointly organised by the Sangai First Foundation (SfF), Manipur, and was attended by PRES Principal Thokchom Jiten as president of the function, along with Sangai First Foundation president Dr Kh Shamungou, SfF vice-president K Jugeshor and ADAM, Kakching chief functionary Surjit Kshetrimayum as distinguished presidium members.
Welcoming the dignitaries, teachers and students, Thokchom Jiten appreciated the initiative and highlighted the importance of environmental education among the younger generation.
Delivering the keynote address, K Jugeshor stressed the significance of wildlife conservation and environmental protection.
He said the programme aimed to create mass awareness among students and young minds for the long-term conservation of Manipur's State Animal.
Surjit Kshetrimayum lauded the efforts of the SfF in promoting conservation awareness and announced a pilot initiative titled "One Teacher, One Plant" to encourage teachers and students to actively participate in afforestation and environmental protection activities.
Dr Kh Shamungou delivered a detailed presentation on the historical importance, biological features and ecological significance of the Sangai deer and its habitat, Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world's only floating national park.
He stressed the need for collective efforts to protect the fragile ecosystem and ensure the survival of the species.
A spot quiz competition on Sangai and environmental conservation was also organised as part of the programme, in which 113 students participated.
Twentyeight meritorious students were selected as winners and will be felicitated during the 3rd Sangai Day Celebration scheduled on December 10, 2026.A demonstration on the importance of Uningthou (Phoebe hainesiana), the State Tree of Manipur, was also conducted.
A sapling of Uningthou was planted inside the school campus as a symbol of commitment towards protecting indigenous plant species and promoting environmental conservation.
Dr Shamungou also donated a set of 13 books authored by him to the school library for the benefit of students, researchers and conservation enthusiasts.
Earlier in the day, the "Save Sangai Campaign Block" was inaugurated at Angaan Ching Eco Park.
The commemorative stone was unveiled by Dr Kh Shamungou.
The programme concluded with a collective pledge by participants to work towards the conservation of Sangai, nature, and the environment for future generations.
