Imphal, March 20 2025:
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi has said that the Government's survey in Tamenglong, Jiribam and Churachandpur in 2010, aimed at identifying oil and gas deposits, yielded no hydrocarbon discoveries.
This statement was made in response to an unstarred question raised by Inner Manipur MP, Dr Bimol Akoijam, during a Lok Sabha session.
The MoS revealed that in 2010, the Government awarded two blocks under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP).
These blocks span 2217 square kilometer and 1740 square kilometer, covering areas in Jiribam, Tamenglong, and Churachandpur.
The Union MoS further stated that the Government of Manipur subsequently granted Petroleum Exploration Licenses (PEL) for the two blocks, with the first license issued on September 20 and the second on September 23 .
However, despite the licenses being granted, the operator ultimately relinquished both blocks on 01-10-2018, as unfortunately, no hydrocarbon discoveries were made , Suresh Gopi added.
He also said that the blocks are not active now .
The MoS, meanwhile, said that the Government has conducted Airborne Gravity Gradiometry and Gravity Magnet survey in Manipur and a total of 5,451 Flight Line Kilometre 2D Seismic data has been acquired in Manipur.
The data is available in the National Data Repository, he said.
