Senapati, July 15 2026:
The Naga Village Guard-Northern Command (NVG-NC) has strongly condemned an alleged operation of Assam Rifles personnel in Senapati district on July 14, alleging that it created fear and panic among residents of the otherwise peaceful district.
In a press release, the organisation described Senapati as one of the most peaceful districts in the region, stating that its people have consistently upheld peace, harmony and humanitarian values despite prevailing challenges.
The release cited recent instances, including the safe release of 14 Kuki detainees on June 9 and the handing over of an allegedly intoxicated Kuki man to his village by local women after he was detained by youth volunteers for creating a nuisance at Senapati Bazar, as examples of the Naga community's commitment to peace and humanity.
Against this backdrop, NVG-NC alleged that heavily armed Assam Rifles personnel, reportedly in full combat gear, attempted to enter Makuilongdi village on the afternoon of July 14, causing fear among residents.
It further claimed that despite appeals from civil society leaders to withdraw the operation, by nightfall, additional personnel later moved towards Makuilongdi and Oklong via the Barak Valley route, heightening public anxiety and prompting large numbers of people to gather at the district headquarters seeking an explanation for the military movement.
The organisation also condemned the alleged firing of hundreds of rounds of live ammunition by Assam Rifles personnel during a confrontation on Tuesday night.
While acknowledging that no casualties were reported, it maintained that the use of live ammunition near civilians, including women and children, was unacceptable and had caused fear and trauma.
Questioning the purpose of the operation, NVG-NC alleged that the military movement had raised serious doubts about its intent and also rejected allegations reportedly made by the Outpost Commander of 16 Assam Rifles, COB Mao, regarding kidnapping activities by Naga national workers, describing the claims as baseless.
The organisation urged the competent authorities to institute an independent and transparent inquiry into the events of July 14, establish the facts, fix responsibility where necessary and ensure that similar incidents do not recur.
