World Environment day observed across Manipur with massive plantation drives and awareness campaigns

World Environment Day was observed across Manipur on Friday with large-scale tree plantation drives, awareness programmes, cleanliness campaigns and the launch of the nationwide "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0" initiative, reaffirming the collective commitment towards environmental conservation and climate action.
Observed under the global theme "Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future", Government departments, educational institutions, civil society organisations, security forces and local communities participated in various activities across the State.
THOUBAL
In Thoubal district, the Thoubal District Working Journalists' Union (TDWJU), under the aegis of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, organised a World Environment Day programme at the Counting Hall of the Thoubal DC Complex in collaboration with the District Administration and Thoubal Forest Division.
Deputy Commissioner Yumnam Robita, Additional District Magistrate Aribam Amarjit Sharma and Divisional Forest Officer Dr Jeeceelee Leishangthem attended the function.
Assistant Professor Dr Sunil Laishram of Waikhom Mani Girls' College delivered a lecture on global and local environmental challenges and the measures needed to address them.
Around 150 saplings were planted around the Mini Secretariat and DC Complex as part of the observance.
Another plantation programme was organised at Uyal Saram/Mamang Ching Ebudhou Pakhangba Haraoching by the Ibudhou Pakhangba Thougallup in collaboration with the Green Revolution Society (GRS), Manipur and DCC Thoubal.
Fruit-bearing saplings were planted around the shrine.
Several organisations, including Guru Ibungo Sharma Sangeet Vidyalaya, Nat Academy Tentha, Manipur Arangpham Development and Cultural Institution (MADCI), and Lairenkabi Youth Dramatic Union, also participated in plantation drives at the site.
A separate plantation programme was held at Eben Ching, Waithou, with the participation of 18 clubs from Haokha Kiyam Siphai-Waithou and Forest Department officials.
Similar activities, including cleanliness drives and sapling plantations, were organised at CMO Office Complex Thoubal and other health institutions across the district.
World Environment Day was also observed at Wangjing Hodam Maning Community Hall, organised by the Weavers Cooperative Society Limited Thoubal and Pioneer Club.
BISHNUPUR
At Bishnupur, Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam inaugurated a Ramsar Signage at the Inland Water Transport Complex, Phubala, followed by a plantation drive organised by the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) in collaboration with the Loktak View Point Development Organisation.
Addressing the gathering, the DC urged people to take meaningful action towards environmental protection through forest conservation, wetland preservation, ecosystem restoration and sustainable lifestyles.
Superintendent of Police Ksh Ravikumar and LDA Project Director H Balkrishna Singh also attended the programme.
World Environment Day was also observed at Moirang College through cleanliness and plantation drives.
The Friendship Organisation Moirang (FOM), in collaboration with the Urban Forest Division and Sendra Road Development Committee, planted ornamental saplings along the Sendra Road median.
KAKCHING
The District Administration Kakching observed the day with a plantation programme at the DC Office Complex while also launching the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0" campaign.
Deputy Commissioner Angeline Renita R, DFO Dr Jeeceelee Leishangthem and other officials participated in the event.
The Zonal Education Office, Kakching, in collaboration with the Kakching Range under the Thoubal Forest Division, organised plantation drives in 50 schools across the district, planting around 5,000 saplings.
Similar drives were conducted in children homes and at various locations including Waikhong, Keirak, Bijoypur and Pallel with support from the police, Assam Rifles and BSF.
Tree plantation drive was also conducted by the officials of Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Kakching Wairi.
Meanwhile, Arambai Tenggol Unit 26 organised a painting competition at Angaan Ching Eco Park, Kakching as part of the World Environment Day observance.
Held under three categories, the competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 480 students representing various educational institutions across the district.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by advisors, commanders, and office bearers of various Arambai Tenggol units of Kakching district and caretaker of the Angaan Ching Eco Park.
TAMENGLONG
The Tamenglong Forest Division launched the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0" campaign across several villages and educational institutions under Tamenglong, Tousem and Tamei ranges.
Plantation drives were conducted at schools, churches, government offices and public spaces to encourage environmental stewardship and honour mothers through tree planting.
Various government departments also marked the occasion with plantation activities at Gaidai Hills, Guangram and Sangrungpang.
CHANDEL
The Chandel Forest Division organised a plantation programme at St Peter Higher Secondary School, Monsang Pantha, under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0" campaign.
MLA Dr SS Olish, Deputy Commissioner Hemant Kumar and DFO N Munal Meitei attended the event.
Around 15,000 saplings were targeted for plantation across different locations, including school campuses and Assam Rifles establishments.
The District Legal Services Authority, Chandel, in association with Kanankhu Youth Club, also conducted cleanliness and plantation drives.
UKHRUL
Ukhrul district launched an ambitious plantation campaign targeting the plantation of 2,47,170 saplings under "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0".The programme was launched by DFO Laishram Gitla at Eden Home Orphanage, Lanaitang.
A seedling distribution drive was also conducted at the Mini Secretariat Complex.
A plantation and water conservation awareness programme was later organised at Somsai Garrison in collaboration with Assam Rifles and local NGO VVD, highlighting the importance of afforestation, spring rejuvenation and groundwater recharge.
The Ukhrul District Working Journalists' Association (UDJWA), in collaboration with the District Administration and Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, also organised an awareness programme followed by a plantation drive during which more than 1,000 saplings were planted.
SENAPATI
The District Administration Senapati, in collaboration with the Senapati Forest Division, launched "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0" at the DRDA office premises.
Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar led the observance, which featured mass cleanliness drives, an awareness rally involving around 300 participants, and a symbolic plantation programme at the Mini Secretariat Complex.
Similar activities were conducted in Liyai, Mao and Karong forest ranges.
Other Districts
World Environment Day was similarly observed in Jiribam, Pherzawl, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Tengnoupal districts through plantation drives, awareness rallies, cleanliness campaigns and environmental education programmes.
In Tengnoupal, the Forest Division led a district-wide plantation campaign involving administrative officials, security forces, village authorities and community members.
The initiative targeted the plantation of 10,000 saplings across 20 villages.
Schools in Churachandpur launched Green Summer Camps under the Eco Club for Mission LiFE programme alongside plantation drives under "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0" .
Security Forces Join Green Mission
The 32 Battalion CRPF organised plantation drives at its headquarters in Loktak and all company locations in collaboration with NHPC Loktak Project, government agencies and local residents.
Meanwhile, Assam Rifles conducted extensive environmental conservation activities across multiple districts of Manipur.
As part of the observance, more than 18,900 indigenous saplings were planted across Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Thoubal, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Ukhrul, Kamjong and Churachandpur districts.
The campaign witnessed participation from over 3,400 personnel and family members, along with village leaders, students, NGOs and government officials, reflecting a broad-based commitment towards environmental protection and climate resilience.
The widespread observance of World Environment Day across Manipur highlighted the growing awareness of ecological conservation and underscored the collective resolve of citizens and institutions to safeguard nature for future generations.
