Relief extended to Riha village; call for impartial action amid ethnic tensions

Imphal, May 05 2026:
Amid ongoing ethnic tensions in parts of the State, a humanitarian assistance programme was organised at Riha village under Phungyar sub-division of Kamjong district, where various civil society groups and individuals from valley districts came together to extend aid to villagers affected by the Tangkhul-Kuki conflict.
Speaking at the programme, Riha village secretary Ninglum Mungvah stressed that the prevailing ethnic violence must be brought under control without any bias on the part of security forces.
He urged the Government to address the situation with seriousness and take appropriate steps to restore peace and stability.

The aid distribution programme was attended by Riha village chief Wanganing Mahung, Thongju Sporting Club president Nameirakpam Chingkhei, South Tangkhul Union chairman Agustine Kashung, and Nameirakpam Leikai Apunba Meira Paibi president Thoudam Inaocha, among others.
Highlighting the plight of the villagers, Ninglum Mungvah stated that Riha village has been facing hardships since the construction of a dam in the area, with many residents dependent on jhum cultivation for their livelihood.
He said the ongoing unrest has severely disrupted daily life, particularly affecting those reliant on such traditional practices and restricting movement He further called for impartial action by central security forces and urged authorities to take firm steps against those responsible for violence against civilians, including arrests and necessary operations to ensure safety and security.
Speaking in connection with the visit, Thongju Sporting Club president Nameirakpam Chingkhei emphasised the need for unity among indigenous communities, stating that during times of hardship, people must support one another beyond community differences.
Relief materials, including essential commodities, were contributed collectively by various clubs, organisations, Meira Paibi Lup, Nupi Lup and like-minded individuals, with Thongju Sporting Club playing the lead role in coordinating and delivering the aid to the villagers.
The Southern Tangkhul Naga Union, Tangkhul Naga Aze Longphang, and the villagers of Riha expressed gratitude for the support extended during this period of distress.
