Awareness programme on waste management held

Ukhrul, June 30 2023: A one-day district level awareness programme on Ukhrul town waste management was held in observation of World Environment Day at Town Hall Phungreitang, Ukhrul today."Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) president Thingreiphy Lungharwo in her keynote speech elaborated on the theme "A desirable place" .

She said that only collective effort and co-operation of the public can achieve the target for zero waste management.

Deputy commissioner, Ukhrul Zuringla Kengoo who attended the awareness programme as chief host stressed on how to go forward in terms of solid waste management in Ukhrul in order to become a plastic free town.

Zuringla added that reckless dumping of garbage on the roadside must be dealt with seriously.

Stating that waste segregation must start from the source, she stressed on the importance of ensuring that waste disposal does not hurt one's locality or neighbours.

She also highlighted that the National Green Tribunal had levied a heavy fine on Manipur of Rs 200 crore for not properly managing its waste.

She added that this is a concern for everyone.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO), ADC Ukhrul David Kashung said that Small Town Committee Ukhrul will start issuing garbage card for effective implementation of the waste management programme.

CEO also informed that temporary dumping site has been identified for disposing garbage.

A pamphlet was also distributed on waste garbage disposal rules to all the participants.

M Zimik, secretary of Khamatek Society of Ukhrul shared that they are dedicating 2 hours every Saturday from 7 to 9 am cleaning clogged drains, picking bottles and planting fruit bearing trees in the town in order to achieve the target of plastic free locality by adopting refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot policies.

Zimik urged the town folk to support and also utilize the installed plastic bottle bank at Ukhrul sensibly for the benefits of all.

Later, after the awareness programme Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul inaugurated the plastic bottle bank installed inside the Mini Secretariat Office Complex Hamleikhong, Ukhrul.

The awareness programme was attended by SP Ukhrul Ningshem Vashum, Themreishang Marei Executive Engineer PHED, Ukhrul and NGOs, pastors, locality leaders, women leaders, youth leaders and Ukhrul ADC staff.
