Chandel/Thoubal, December 05 2025:
World Soil Day 2025 was observed today at Chandel and Thoubal under the theme "Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities", organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of both districts.
The programme stressed the urgent need to protect soil resources amid rapid urbanisation and climate change.
During the event held at the Conference Hall of KVK Chandel, Dr Kangjam Sonamani Singh, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil & Water Conservation), stressed that over 95 percent of the world's food comes from soil and 15 of the 18 essential nutrients for plants originate from it.
He expressed concern over soil degradation caused by deforestation, pollution and improper land practices, which ultimately threaten food security and human health.
He emphasized that urban soils are equally important as they help regulate temperature, promote rainwater absorption and improve air quality.
However, rapid urban development and cemented landscapes have weakened soil functions, making cities more vulnerable to flooding, heat and pollution.
He urged collective efforts to build greener and more resilient cities by safeguarding soil health.
Chief guest Sp Lovejoy Anal, DAO Chandel, highlighted that soil is the foundation of life and encouraged farmers to adopt organic and sustainable agricultural practices.
He also urged them to avail benefits of soil health cards for improved farm productivity.
Guest of honour Dr Asem Ameeta Devi, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Chandel, said that healthy soils ensure not only healthy crops but also healthy citizens.
Proper nutrient balance, she added, plays a crucial role in boosting farmers' income and providing nutritious food to communities.
During the programme, soil health cards and packets of vegetable seeds were distributed to 48 participating farmers.
The event also saw the attendance of officials from the Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation and scientific staff of KVK Chandel.
Meanwhile, World Soil Day was also observed at KVK Thoubal Campus with a similar message of promoting soil conservation.
It was attended by RRS Wangbal Rice Breeder L Shantikiran Devi; Horticulture & Soil Conservation Thoubal, District Officer Khaidem Malemnganba Meitei; and KVK Thoubal Sr Scientist & Head in-charge Dr Kh Premlata Devi as presidium members.
During the programme soil health cards and critical inputs were also distributed to the farmers from Thoubal and Kakching.
A technical session on soil management and a farmerscientist interaction followed, where experts shared practical steps to improve soil fertility for a healthier ecosystem and sustainable agriculture.
