World Consumer Rights Day observed

The Department of Commerce, Manipur University (MU), Canchipur observed World Consumer Rights Day, 2024 at its Conference Hall on the theme, "Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers" yesterday.
It was attended by Gourav Kumar, Manager, Consumer Education & Protection Department, Reserve Bank of India, Imphal Branch; Tejmani Sinam, Head, Department of Computer Science, MU; Prof L Prabhakar Singh, Director, Manipur Institute of Management Studies, MU and Prof N Tejmani Singh, Head, Department of Commerce, MU as presidium members, said a release.
Speaking on the occasion, Gourav Kumar highlighted the significance of educating consumers especially those of banking service to enhance their awareness on consumer rights and protective measures in cases of financial frauds.
He also mentioned the different ways of financial frauds happening these days like frauds through phishing links, Vishing Calls, online marketplaces, ATM Card Skimming, Sim Cloning, QR Code Scan, Charging Cable, E-mails, etc.
Speaking on the theme "Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers", Tejmani Sinam said, "Development of AI has been a very slow pace, but recently it.
has started increasing the pace and one day in everything we do, AI may get involved and may become a challenge for the human being also".
He continued that advertisements of different products pop up on social media accounts based on consumer's data of online searches and purchases through AI.
Prof L Prabhakar Singh stressed on the importance of being smart and conscious consumers while purchasing goods online or offline.
Prof N Tejmani Singh opined that lessons on financial literacy, consumer rights and protection measures should be included in educational institutions.
The event attended by faculties of the department, research scholars and students of M Com 1st and 3rd semesters concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Ksh Ranjan Singh.
