Imphal, June 14 2026:
The third anniversary of the Khamenlok massacre was observed yesterday at Nongshum in Konthoujam Assembly Constituency, with a renewed call for unity among indigenous communities.
Organised by Eramdam Kanba Lup (EKAL), the programme was held in memory of the 10 Meetei youths who were killed during the Khamenlok incident on June 13, 2023 .
The main event of the observance was the offering of tributes to the 'bravehearts' .
A one minute silence was also observed in honour of the six Nagas murdered by the Kuki groups recently.
Family members along with leaders of civil society organisations belonging to different indigenous communities and people from various walks of life paid their respects to the martyrs.
Addressing the function, former rebel leader RK Meghen alias Sanayaima said that longstanding issues besetting Manipur are likely to persist, and as such unity among indigenous communities is of paramount importance.
Saying that the violent campaign, which initially targeted the Meiteis, has now affected the Nagas too, he added that the objective of the campaign is to break the backbone of Manipuri society and jeopardise the State's economy.
He also said that Kuki groups have been killing members of indigenous communities in a brutal manner to create permanent enmity among the communities.
The Kukis want to confine the Meeteis in the valley districts, Meghen added.
There is no respite in the influx of illegal immigrants into the State, he said, adding that hostile forces are also working to increase illegal immigrants to suppress indigenous communities.
Meghen said that political power of the indigenous communities may be go to the Kukis, given the way the situation has been unfolding.
Saying that the Government may attempt to disarm the Nagas in a manner similar to the disarmament of the Meeteis during the President's Rule regime, he reiterated that unity among indigenous communities is crucial.
Rajya Sabha MP Leisemba Sanajaoba also called for unity among the indigenous people, stating that this is not the time to blame one another.
The indigenous communities are now in the same boat, he said, referring to the violent crisis the Meeteis and the Nagas have been facing.
He also appealed to the gathering not to be carried away by emotion, underscoring the need to protect Manipur collectively.
