Senapati, July 09 2026:
The 38th commemoration of Operation Bluebird (1987), also known as Onae Reh Dah (The Great Battle of Oinam), was observed on Thursday at SM Sha Hall, Rikhumai Taphou, Tahamzam in Senapati district, with participants paying tribute to the victims and reiterating the demand for justice.
The programme was organised by the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) and hosted by the Poumai Naga Union (PNU) to honour those affected by Operation Bluebird and reflect on its historical significance.
Delivering the opening remarks, PNU general secretary Dominic Azuna welcomed the gathering and stressed the importance of remembering the past with dignity.
Quoting, "A nation that remembers its suffering with dignity preserves its future with courage," he said the commemoration was not only about recalling a painful chapter in history but also about honouring the courage, sacrifice and resilience of those who endured the operation.
He paid tribute to the victims, expressed solidarity with their families and urged people to uphold human rights and ensure that the events are never forgotten.
A survivor of Operation Bluebird also shared his testimony during the programme.
The event featured a solidarity message from the Naga Students' Federation (NSF), while former PNNM president V Martha Soto reflected on the formation and journey of the Poumai Naga Naotumai Me (PNNM), highlighting the role played by Naga women during the operation.
Addressing the gathering, United Naga Council (UNC) Working Committee convenor Samson Remei described Operation Bluebird as a tragic chapter in Naga history that left deep scars on the people of Oinam and nearly 30 neighbouring villages.
He said the victim families continue to endure the pain of losing their loved ones while many survivors still live with the trauma of the operation.
Recalling the significance of the annual commemoration, Remei said it was unfortunate that justice had remained elusive even after nearly four decades.
He alleged that the perpetrators had not been held accountable and urged that the issue continue to be raised at regional, national and international human rights forums until justice is delivered.
Reaffirming solidarity with all the victims, he said the Naga people would continue their pursuit of justice and dignity.
The programme concluded with a closing note by NPMHR (South) convenor Joyson Mazamo.
A one-minute silent prayer was observed in memory of the victims of Operation Bluebird.
