PHED targets 1,097 villages with Rs 1,200 crore water supply projects in Manipur

The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) is implementing water supply projects worth over Rs 1,200 crore to provide safe drinking water to 1,097 villages across Manipur under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India.
This was stated by PHED Additional Chief Engineer Dorendro Rajkumar during a media interaction organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) at the DIPR Auditorium, Nityaipat Chuthek on Tuesday.
The interaction was aimed at promoting transparency, strengthening public awareness and supporting good governance through timely dissemination of authentic information.
DIPR Director Dr Th Charanjeet, Additional Director T Ramesh, PHED Superintending Engineers Th Bebina Devi and L Irish Singh, and Executive Engineer Th Pika Singh also attended the session.
Dorendro said PHED is currently executing multiple schemes including water treatment plants, Urban and Rural Water Supply Schemes, Sewerage Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission to ensure potable water in both urban and rural areas.
JJM and Sewerage Progress
Under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), 38 percent of rural households in Manipur have already received functional tap water connections.
The mission is scheduled for completion by December 2028, but the department aims to complete it by March 2028 if the working environment remains conducive.
Under the Sewerage Mission, Phase-I covering Uripok, Lamphel and Thangmeiband has been completed.
Work on Phase-II, estimated at Rs 1,200 crore, is underway.
Urban Projects and Infrastructure Upgrades
The Manipur Water Supply Project is being implemented in urban areas, municipal areas, Greater Imphal and 25 council towns with funding from the New Development Bank (NDB) as an externally aided project.
Other projects are being taken up under NLCPR, HADP, NEC and SIDE to cover areas not included under JJM.
The NDB project has achieved about 83% physical progress and is targeted for completion by June 2027.The Imphal Sewerage Project, which began in 2024, has also reached 50% completion and is slated for completion in 2027.Dorendro added that 17 water treatment plants are currently functional in 14 urban areas of the State.
To improve efficiency, PHED has introduced smart water meters, an online billing portal, and a SCADA-based monitoring system for real-time distribution management.
Following the digital push, revenue collection has increased by nearly 40 to 50 percent.
He further informed that old cast iron distribution pipelines are being replaced with ductile iron pipes under various schemes.
Several overhead reservoirs and storage tanks have also been constructed under externally aided projects.
Appeal to Public
Dorendro said JJM aims to provide tap connections to every household and the remaining households will be covered in phases.
He urged consumers facing billing issues after meter installation to register complaints officially or through the online portal.
He also appealed to communities managing their own water supply systems to hand them over to PHED for scientific operation and better maintenance.
