Thoubal, May 07 2026:
Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and MLA of Wangkhem Assembly Constituency, Keisham Meghachandra, today inspected the Waithou Pat area in Thoubal district to assess the recurring flooding problem affecting vast agricultural land and fish farms in the region.
The inspection was carried out along with officials from various departments, NHIDCL representatives and local villagers, followed by a review meeting to discuss the grievances faced by the people.
The meeting was attended by officials from the District Administration, Thoubal, and Water Resources Department, including Water Resources Department Secretary Somorjit Salam, Chief Engineer Y Homendro Singh, SDO Lilong M Priyaroshni Devi, SDC Lilong Ch Rakesh Singh, SDPO Thoubal O Ajit Singh, District Agriculture Officer RK Umakanta Singh and officials of NHIDCL.
Residents of villages surrounding Waithou Pat, representatives of local clubs and Meira Paibi groups also attended the meeting and highlighted the hardships faced by farmers and fish farm owners due to frequent flooding during the rainy season.
Speaking during the meeting, Keisham Meghachandra stated that around 4,000 lou paris of paddy fields located near Waithou Pat, which are suitable for double cropping and fish farming, remain severely affected by waterlogging every monsoon season.
He said many farmers have been unable to cultivate crops or rear fish for years due to persistent flooding, causing major distress and economic losses to the local population.
The CLP leader alleged that the flooding problem worsened following the ongoing National Highway construction works undertaken by NHIDCL.
He stated that canal stretches earlier excavated by the Water Resources Department were filled up during the highway widening process, obstructing the natural flow of water.
As a result, rainwater which earlier drained through the Waikhong River now overflows into nearby paddy fields and fish farms during the monsoon season, he added.
Appealing to the concerned departments, Meghachandra urged officials to include the matter as part of their work programme and take necessary measures to restore proper drainage facilities to prevent further flooding in the area.
He also appealed to the authorities to ensure the successful implementation of the Waithou Water Supply Project while taking into consideration the grievances and suggestions raised by the people.
The MLA further urged all concerned departments to jointly examine the matter through consultation and explore practical solutions to address the long-standing flooding problem affecting the residents of Waithou Pat.
