Imphal, April 28 2026:
Several organisations have condemned the assault on former Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) president Mayengbam Somorjit by a mob at Khwairamband Keithel.
Notably, the incident occurred on April 25, the same day the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) staged a protest and submitted a memorandum containing seven questions to the Government.
Condemning the incident, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup (Tammi Chingmi), Ereipak Enaat Chanura Loinsinlon (EECHAL), United People's Front (UPF), Manipur, Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK), Civil Society Organisations, Kangleipak, Union of Social Upliftment (USU), All Manipur College Teachers' Association (AMCTA), Manipuri Chanura Leishem Marup (Macha Leima), Ningthoukhong Protection Committee (NPC), Women Welfare Organisation, Kangleipak (WWOK) and All Manipur Students Guardians' Organisation (AMSGO), expressed their outrage.
While many of these organisations argued that the assault on the former DESAM president may have been instigated by individuals with vested interests, others stated that the attack undermines democratic values.
Nupi Samaj president Thokchom Ongbi Ramani stated that creating division among the Meitei people amid the prevailing situation in Manipur would be akin to cutting off one's own leg.
She appealed to all concerned to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future.
Condemning the assault, CCSK contended that certain groups exploited the April 25 protest to defame COCOMI .
CCSK also said that some social media pages misrepresented COCOMI to create confusion among the public, an action it deemed unfortunate.
On the other hand, CSOs Kangleipak stated that spreading false propaganda against COCOMI leaders and the assault on Somorjit were attempts to suppress the people's movement.
It also stated that attempting to misrepresent the movement aimed at safeguarding Manipur is an unforgivable act.
Macha Leima, said that the assault on former DESAM president was aimed at discrediting people's movement.
AMGSO, on the other hand, urged the Government to arrest and penalise all individuals involved in the assault.
Expressing their outrage, AMCTA stated that targeting Somorjit, who was participating in COCOMI's protest, is an undermining of democratic values by a section of people who fail to see the future of Manipur's society.
It appealed to all concerned to ensure that such acts do not recur in the future.
While UPF argued that the assault on Somorjit was orchestrated by some people to tarnish the protest organised by COCOMI, USU appealed to the people of Manipur to refrain from engaging in activities that seek to create division 'among us'.
WWOK stated that any attempt to divert the people's movement will never succeed.
