Thoubal, February 19 2026:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), as part of its ongoing "Campaign for Total Education", conducted an inspection visit to Nimaichand and Keinya Government High School located at Thoubal Wangmataba.
In a press release, AMSU Information and Publicity Secretary, Serto Komo stated that the school, which offers classes from I to X, was established prior to Manipur attaining Statehood, however the union found that the institution is currently functioning without a regular headmaster and is being managed by a teacher serving as in-charge.
During the inspection, AMSU observed that many teachers were attending school regularly and on time.
However, the union expressed concern over the condition of the school's infrastructure.
Despite being a full-fledged government school running from Class I to X, it reportedly lacks adequate classrooms to accomodate students.
The release further highlighted that the school building, being old and inadequately maintained over the years, has developed several cracks on the walls, damaged flooring, and doors and windows in a dilapidated state.
The boys' toilets were also found unusable due to clogging.
AMSU also pointed out a shortage of subject teachers, stating that the required number of teachers for mathematics, social science, manipuri and certain optional subjects have not been appointed.
The union noted that although the school has one of the highest number of students enrolment among government schools in the State, the lack of adequate staff and infrastructure raises serious concerns.
"If government schools are maintained in such a condition, it is natural for parents and guardians to hesitate in sending their children to government schools," the statement added.
The union therefore appealed to the State Government and the Education Department to take immediate steps to address the issues faced by the school, cautioning that failure to improve the condition of the school with significant student strength could further contribute to the gradual degradation of government schools in the State.
