Imphal, July 07 2026:
Foreign medical graduates undergoing internship at State-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, staged a sit-in protest demanding release of pending stipend today.
During the protest demonstration, the interns claimed that foreign medical graduates of two batches undergoing internship at JNIMS have not been given stipends.
Even though there has been a ruling of the Supreme Court and the Medical Council instructing interns to be paid stipends, the interns at JNIMS have not been given their due stipend, they said.
The interns said they have approached several authorities concerned and the Chief Minister himself but without any progress and positive results.
While Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand had even forwarded a signed document to the Health Commissioner, the latter has refused to grant an appointment to them, said the interns.
The sit-in was organised seeking the attention of the Health Commissioner and the authorities concerned, said the interns.
As the foreign graduate interns aren't provided hostel and mess facilities, they arrange fooding and lodging themselves.
Most of them are staying in rented rooms.
Giving them stipend could ease financial constraints they are facing during internship, they said.
While other interns are given a stipend of Rs 25,000, a hike from Rs 15,000 earlier, the foreign medical graduates aren't given anything, they said.
"We are performing the same duties other interns are performing.
Not awarding stipend is a violation of our rights," they said, seeking an appointment with the Health Commissioner.
