Two arrested in Kunjabihari murder case

Imphal, January 28, 2011: Two persons arrested on January 16, 2011 in connection with the murder of BSEM chairman, N Kunjabihari on January 11, and who were in police custody, have been remanded by a court to their custody till January 31. Potshangbam Opendro alias Pukchao (43) son of Late Ibotombi of Mayang Imphal Konchak and Yumnam Somendro @ Tiken (35) son of Roton of Churachandpur Thengra Leirak presently residing at Thangapat Konung Leikai were arrested by the police in connection with the case registered with Imphal PS under section 302 of IPC, 25(1-B) of Arms Act and 16/20 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, a source from the court said.

The arrested duo was produced in the court of Imphal West duty magistrate the next day and the magistrate had directed the police to produce them at 1 pm on January 31 and had also directed that a medical check-up be conducted every 24-hours, the source added.

Producing them in the court, the prosecution counsel in favour of the police had sought 25 days remand for P Upendra and Y Somendro for further investigation.

They were arrested following investigations into the origin of cell phone number 8974893522.Local newspapers had reported that one Brojendro Luwang had used the phone number to threaten Kunjabihari of dire consequences if he became the BSEM chairman.

During investigation into the history of the number, police came to know that the phone call was from handset IEMI No.359611023612970. After tapping the phone number and the handset, police picked up P Upendro for verification.

He admitted threatening Kunjabihari from the said cell phone number.

He further disclosed that he had done so on Somendro's insistence.

Somendro was arrested as per the statement of Upendro.

He admitted of insisting Upendro to threaten Kunjabihari, the source said.

Upendro runs a printing press at Mayang Imphal.

He had printed books for the BSEM and frequently visited the board office for further contract works.

On the day Kunjabihari died, he had visited the BSEM office, the source added.
