Imphal, September 23 2025:
After a hiatus of 3/4 years owing to the pandemic and the Manipur crisis, the 28th Loktak Day is set to be observed at Komlakhong Chingthi in Imphal West district on October 7.This was announced by Asem Sharat, president of Loktak Day Celebration Committee, Komlakhong during a press conference held at Manipur Press Club in Majorkhul today.
Speaking to the media, Sharat said that the objective behind organising Loktak Day is to foster conservation of the biggest freshwater lake in North East India which plays a crucial role in combating climate change for the Manipur valley on top of providing a livelihood to those settled in its vicinity.
He also highlighted the role of people in saving the lake in light of widespread felling of trees in the hill areas leading to deposition of sediment in the lake (siltation), reducing its depth and affecting the water quality.
Additionally, he shed light on the growing pollution of the lake, especially plastic pollution and the impact of Ithai barrage on the lake's natural state.
Small rivers/channels such as Khordak and Ungamen which used to flow in/out of the lake have been restricted by the barrage.
It is also responsible for the three recent floods which ravaged the State, claimed Sharat.
As a result, the Loktak Day celebration has been organised with saving the lake as its main goal.
He also expressed hope for Loktak Day to be celebrated at the State level like Manipur Sangai Festival and Shirui Lily Festival.
