Imphal, April 07 2025:
The Delhi Meetei Co-ordinating Committee (DMCC) staged a demonstration titled "Koubru Kashi" and a prayer meeting for Eputhou Koubru, Eputhou Thangjing, Eputhou Wangpurel and Eputhou Marjing at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi today.
In a statement, DMCC said that Koubru Kashi (Let us ascend Mount Koubru) is not merely a spiritual call but a profound assertion of the Meetei community's unbroken cultural and religious legacy.
"It is a demand to reclaim our right to reclaim our right to access the sacred sites that define our identity, spirituality and survival," it added.
Saying that Meeteis, however, have been forcibly denied access to Mount Koubru, Mount Thangjing and Eputhou Wangpurel by Kuki armed groups, the DMCC maintained that these violent actions allegedly backed by Indian State are a blatant attack on religious freedom and indigenous rights.
Further claiming that the ethnic violence triggered on May 3, 2023 saw coordinated attacks on Meeteis by Kuki mobs armed and emboldened by militant outfits that continue to operate under the protection of Indian security forces, DMCC added that the Government of India bears direct responsibility for allowing the State to burn.
The ground reality remains unchanged even after the imposition of President's Rule, it continued and alleged that the Kuki armed groups continue to defy the Indian Constitution and the Union Government has willingly capitulated to their condition.
Further stating that Meeteis are excluded from 92 per cent of their own land while recently 'migrated Chin Kuki groups are given Scheduled Tribe status and special protection', the DMCC said, "This is not just a demographic distortion but a historic injustice against the indigenous Meetei people" .
"To deny Meeteis access to Koubru, Thangjing and Wangpurel is to deny them their Gods, their history, their breath," it asserted.
Urging the Government to restore rule of law, ensure free movement and end support to sectarian and militant forces, the DMCC added that lakhs of Meeteis are ready to lay down their lives to defend Koubru, Thangjing and Wangpurel.
It also demanded re-establishment of all dismantled religious places in Manipur.
