World Environment Day observed widely

As observed across the globe, World Environment Day was celebrated across the State today under the theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution', by various organisations/institutions to raise awareness on the importance of conserving, preserving and protecting the environment.
Plantation of saplings, cleanliness drive, Yoga session and essay competitions were the main highlights of World Environment Day observation
in the State.
NEISTZ AIMS
The CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, Imphal, in collaboration with Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, observed World Environment Day 2025 with a firm message regarding eliminating plastic pollution.
The observation began with the planting of Bamboo plants followed by a welcome address by Dr Paonam Priyobrata, Director of AIMS.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Atom Sunil Singh, Director of AIMS, emphasised the need to shift toward regenerative, biodegradable substitutes, especially those coming from local ecosystems and indigenous knowledge systems.
Dr RK Chingkhei, Assistant Professor, Dhanamanjuri University, said, "These unseen, microscopic pollutants, though imperceptible to the human eye, now appear in daily essentials such as food, potable water, and even in the air, and they are an increasingly grave world issue".
Prof Huidrom Birkumar Singh, Head Scientist, CSIR-NEIST, Imphal; Dr S Manikanta Singh, retired Additional Director of Health Services, Manipur; Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, President, AIMS; and Mingthing Mawung, headman, Louphong Village, Kamjong district were also present at the event as dignitaries.
RIMS
As part of the Swachhta Action Plan (SAP) 2025-26, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed World Environment Day at Jubilee Hall, RIMS, under the global theme "Ending Plastic Pollution".
The event aimed to promote environmental sustainability and raise awareness among students and healthcare professionals about the importance of reducing plastic waste.
The programme was graced by Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital; and Prof Y Govindaraj Singh, Nodal Officer, SAP 2025-26/Kayakalp, RIMS as the chief guest & president respectively.
In his address, Prof N Sanjib Singh highlighted the pressing issue of plastic waste in hospitals and emphasized adopting eco-friendly practices, saying, "Providing healthcare should not come at the cost of harming the environment.
Reducing single-use plastic and fostering responsible habits are crucial steps toward a healthier future" .
To mark the occasion, a tree plantation drive was organised at the northern and western sides of A-Block, RIMS.
A meditation and yoga session was also conducted to emphasize mental well-being, while Plastic Footprint Calculator Booths were set up to help students assess their individual plastic consumption.
The event also featured expert talks by environmental advocate Jodha Heikrujam on the topic "How Individual Habits Contribute to Global Plastic Waste and Pollution", and Mutum Monika Chanu, Nursing Officer at RIMS Hospital, on "Public Roles in Reducing Single-Use Plastic Items in Hospital Premises" .
The programme was attended by the Deputy Director (Admn), RIMS, Imphal; Principal of the Dental College, RIMS, Imphal; Heads of Departments; staff; and students from various schools across the State.
Sathoulup
Sahitya Thoupang Lup (Sathoulup) celebrated World Environment Day at the Loktak Hall of Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
The celebration was graced by retired IFS officer Th Mohendra Pratap Singh and Travellers Forum Manipur chairman RK Budhimanta as the chief guest & president respectively.
As part of the event, the Ningombam Pheiraba Award for the year 2025 was presented to environmentalist Dr Khangembam Shamungou in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of environmental protection.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000, citation and a shawl.
Sahitya Thoupang Lup advisor Sharatchand Thiyam was also present at the event.
Khongnangthaba University
World Environment Day was also celebrated today at Khongnangthaba University (KTU), hosted by the Eco-chapter of the varsity.
The observation was graced by dignitaries, including Dr K Kunjabali Singh, Deputy Director (Research), KTU; Dr PN Singh, Head, Department of AYUSH, KTU; and Prof N Ibotombi Singh, Controller of Examinations, KTU.
The event began with a welcome address by Dr L Imoba, Assistant Professor, KTU, who discussed the significance of community service towards environmental conservation and eradicating plastic pollution.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Atom Sunil Singh, Registrar, KTU .
Shija Hospitals
Shija Hospitals, Langol in collaboration with various organisations celebrated World Environment Day today by organising a tree plantation drive in the Langol area.
The joint effort aimed to restore degraded land, increase green cover and support biodiversity using scientifically selected indigenous species thereby restoring the ecosystem.
At the event, Dr Palin Khundongbam, Managing Director, Shija Hospitals, emphasized the importance of environmental conservation and community welfare.
The plantation drive was also participated by senior members of Shija Hospitals' management team, including Dr Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Director Medical Services; Dr Chetan Khundongbam, Joint Managing Director; Pambei Khundongbam, Executive Finance and Santosh Thokchom, Deputy ManagerBusiness Development.
Around 480 saplings were planted during the plantation drive.
MBC Centre Church
MBC Centre Church, Imphal, joined the global community today in observing World Environment Day with a special clean-up drive around the Church premises.
The event was held under this year's global theme "Ending Plastic Pollution Globally", highlighting the urgent need to combat plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability.
The social work was led by Pastor Rev Zuankamang Daimai along with the Church deacons.
At the event, Rev Daimai said, "As believers, we are called to care for God's creation.
This effort is a small but meaningful step toward protecting our environment and inspiring others to do
the same" .
IIE
World Environment Day was also celebrated today at Ibotombi Institute of Education (HE), Kha Naorem Leikai, Imphal.
It was attended by Dr RK Bijen Singh, Principal, HE; Naorem Ingochouba Singh, Coordinator, IQAC, IIE; and S Dayarani Devi, Lecturer, IIE, as presidium members The staff and teacher students of BEd and DElEd courses of HE were also present at the event.
As part of the programme, an essay competition was also organised for the studentteachers.
PFA Manipur
As celebrated across the globe, People for Animals (PFA), Manipur observed World Environment Day today by releasing twelve rescued animals into the wild.
The twelve wild animals were previously rescued by PFA Manipur.
Two Bengal Slow Loris, six Monocled Cobra, one Rednecked Keelback, one Crested Serpent Eagle, one Spotted dove and one Rhesus Macaque were released in the wild.
Intas Foundation
To mark World Environment Day, Intas Foundation's Apna Ghar hosted a meaningful and engaging celebration at its office in Keishamthong Irom Pukhri Mapal today.
The event was held in the spirit of environmental responsibility, inclusivity, and community service, with active participation from cancer patients and their caregivers.
This year's activity centered around the creation of eco-friendly paper bags using old newspapers.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about reusing waste materials and reducing plastic usage, aligning with the global theme of sustainability and environmental protection.
The handmade paper bags were later donated to nearby local shops, promoting an eco-conscious alternative for daily use while also encouraging community-level adoption of sustainable practices.
The event was both therapeutic and purposefill.
Cancer patients and their caregivers worked side by side in an atmosphere of creativity and shared learning, demonstrating that every individual regardless of health challenges can contribute meaningfully to the environment.
Volunteers from Intas Foundation facilitated the activity, offering support and guidance throughout the process.
The initiative was well received by the local shopkeepers, who appreciated the gesture and pledged to use the donated paper bags in place of plastic ones.
Similarly, World Environment Day celebration was also organised today by Lukram Leirak Youth Club (LLYC); and Institution of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre.
