Imphal, July 28 2010:
At least 79 goods transporters including 20 oil tankers reached Imphal along the national highway (NH)-39 on Wednesday while another 40 empty oil tankers escorted by CRPF personnel left along the same route today, police said.
The 79 goods-laden trucks also included transporters carrying mostly fetilizers, cement and edible items.
The CRPF escort team was led by DIG for the protection of Manipur bound vehicles, added the source.
Mention may be made that the Ministry of Home Affairs has deployed two companies of CRPF within Nagaland for the protection of Manipur bound vehicles passing along the Dimapur-Imphal section of NH-39.The Ministry of Home Affairs has also instructed the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to sent oil tankers through Imphal-Dimapur road along NH-39 .
The initiative was undertaken by the Union Ministry to overcome shortage of essential items in Manipur in the aftermath of the Naga students' blockade.
