Congress questions State BJP on essence of "Good Governance"
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, December 27 2023: The State BJP observing the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee as "Good Governance Day" in strife-torn Manipur is a black ink on the face of the late former Prime Minister, said Congress.

The State BJP celebrated the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 25 .

At the Rishang Keishing Media Centre Hall at Congress Bhavan, Imphal today, MPCC president K Meghachandra said the State BJP leaders seem "lacking" the knowledge of "good governance" .

"State BJP leaders should have looked up the meaning of 'good governance' in the dictionary before celebrating the day as good governance day," said K Meghachandra, taking a swipe at the BJP for "failing" to end the nearly 8-month-old conflict between the Meiteis and the Kukis.

Since May 3, people are still hearing sounds of gun firing.

Peace has not returned to Manipur, he said.

"The Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers have failed to bring about a solution to the crisis.

No steps are seen taken up, and it is not known when the crisis will end.

The air is still filled with the cries of the people whose houses have been burnt," K Meghachandra said.

Amid the turmoil, the State BJP celebrated the birth anniversary of late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as "good governance day".

This is unfortunate.

The BJP leaders should study and ponder if there really is good governance in Manipur, he said.

It is known to all how the State BJP is seen by the people in Manipur amid the crisis on social media and in newspapers.

There is no good governance in Manipur, he said.

"Highways are still blocked.

There was a complete ban on mobile internet services for months.

Meiteis are unable to travel on the Highways.

Are these examples of good governance?" asked the MPCC president.

The Government has failed to resume the Manipur State Transport (MST) bus services in Mao and Churachandpur, he said.

Providing a meagre amount of Rs 200 per head as old age and widow pensions to displaced people in relief camps is not an example of good governance, he added.

Amid the crisis, many BJP MLAs have spent months in Delhi.

Many are still in Delhi.

Are they truly working for the welfare of the people? he asked.

K Meghachandra further asserted that the Government hasn't taken up any steps to improve the economy of the people and is unable to timely give salaries of employees and pensioners.

"The present conflict isn't between two States.

It is internal.

Why has the Government so far failed to bring a solution ? Why is it not trying ? Is the Government going to destroy the 2000 plus years of Manipur's history?" he asked.

The present Government, he said, is such that an MLA "manhandled" a displaced person staying in a relief camp.

"India's security forces have the capacity to end the crisis in a matter of hours, but the Prime Minister isn't trying to resolve the crisis.

He hasn't spoken about the crisis," he said.

If not resolved, the crisis may turn uglier.

If the BJP Government remains in power, people of Manipur may suffer more, he added.

K Meghachandra informed that the Congress party is submitting an affidavit to the Commission of Inquiry that is probing Manipur violence.

MPCC vice president Hareshwar Goshwami and Advocate N Bhupendra Meitei will visit Delhi and submit the affidavit in the interest of the people, he said.
