Imphal, December 14 2010:
Even as motorbikes have been pro-vided to help the forest guards more mobile in protecting the Sangai in Keibul Lamjao National Park, a rescue centre for the endangered species is being developed inside the Park along with assistance from the Wild Life Institute of India.
According to an official source, these are some of the notable measures that the Forest and Environment Department has taken up for the protection of Sangai after Operation Summer Storm launched jointly by the Army and State Police to flush out UGs from Loktak lake in 2009 .

Wild Life Wing of the Department has provided 5 motorbikes to help in the patrolling of the Forest Guards to every nook and corner of the Park.
This is in addition to the patrolling being carried out inside the Park on boats, the source said, adding that one Tata 407 hasalso been inducted for the convenience of the Forest Guards in performing their duties.
Furthermore, steps have been taken up for development of a rescue centre for Sangai inside the Park with the help of Wild Life Institute of India.
The rescue centre is expected to be completed and commissioned by March next year, the source said.
The complaints of visitors to the Park that Sangais are not seen would be over once the rescue centre is made functional, the official said, adding that the rescue centre would also be used for scientific study on Sangai and its natural habitat.
On the other hand, to help in the livelihood of the villagers settling around the Park and discourage them to encroach inside the Park, the Department has taken up steps to finance formation of about 10 self help groups.
Ten Solar Street Lighting System have already been provided to the villagers from the side of the Department.
It may be noted here that a survey report of Wild Life Institute of India has pointed out that the population of Sangai in the Park which covers an area of 20 sq km has more or less remained stable.
