Imphal, March 07 2025:
A woman was found dead on the steps of a community pond at Malom Makha Leikai this morning.
The deceased has been identified as Thokchom (O) Matouleibi (40) w/o Thokchom Tomba of Malom Makha Leikai.
Matouleibi was found dead in the pond by some local people at around 5.35 am.
After inspection of the site where Matouleibi was found dead by a team of forensic science experts, police have deposited the body at RIMS mortuary.
An FIR has also been registered at Nambol police station in connection with the death.
Speaking to media persons at RIMS mortuary, Matouleibi's elder brother Chingtham Arjun expressed strong suspicion of the circumstances under which his sister was found dead.
Injury marks were seen on her body and one earring was also found missing, Arjun said.
Moreover, her hair was found cut randomly.
"My sister did not drown.
Her body was not floating in the pond.
She was found with her head resting on the steps", Arjun said.
He said that one of Matouleibi's sandals was found on the nearby ground while the other was found worn by her.
He said that Thokchom Tomba's family did not give them any information about the death of Matouleibi.
No family member of Matouleibi's in-laws was seen at the site where she was found dead nor did they come to the RIMS mortuary, Arjun said.
On being enquired, Tomba's family only said that they saw Matouleibi till 8 pm of Thursday, Arjun said.
He then appealed to the authorities concerned to establish the facts and circumstances leading to his sister's death.
Thokchom Tomba and Matouleibi have three children.
On the allegation of Thokchom Tomba and his family that Matouleibi had illicit affair with a non-local, Matouleibi was arrested by police on March 4, he said.
Since four/five months back, Matouleibi's family had been witnessing frequent quarrels and Tomba started harassing his wife after consuming liquor, Arjun alleged.
Recently, Tomba's family allegedly asked Arjun to take back his sister at the earliest.
