MHRC team takes stock of human rights issues in Chandel

Chandel, December 02 2023: The Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC), Justice UB Saha today visited Chandel district to assess human rights conditions in the district.

The Chairperson was accompanied by member KK Singh, Head of Investigation Division of MHRC, Mamata Wahengbam and IGP and Law Officer, W Basantakumar.

During his visit, the Chairperson interacted with different community leaders and the District Level Officers (DLOs) at the Conference Hall, DC complex, Chandel.

During the interaction, the Chairperson urged the people of the district to speak up for their rights and inform the commission if there is any form of human rights violation in the district.

He further opined that Naga community may take a pivotal role in bridging both the conflict communities for restoration of peace in the State.

Deputy Commissioner Chandel, Mayanglambam Rajkumar elucidated the technical and administrative aspects of some of the issues brought up by the public during the interaction.

SP Chandel apprised the team that crime rate in the district is very low and there are less cases in three police stations under his jurisdiction.

The MHRC team also listened to various grievances raised by the village chiefs.

David from Chandel Naga People's Organisation raised various human rights issues where he highlighted that there are no specialist doctors in the District Hospital Chandel.

He also informed that livelihood of the villagers are badly affected by ongoing ethnic conflict and the normal activities of the people are hindered by frequent frisking and checking along the road by security forces and by other communities.

Today's program was also attended by ADC Chandel Md Firoj Khan, SDOs, DLOs, Village heads, leaders of the civil societies of the district.

Later the MHRC team visited Chandel Police Station and was shocked to learn that investigation of a murder case is being conducted without maintaining a case diary.

In view of the above, Justice Saha advised the SP to personally inspect the police stations in a proper manner.

The team also visited Chandil Khullen which is just around 2 kilometres away from the District Headquarters.

During the visit, Justice Saha interacted with two minor girls who lost their parents due to substance abuse.

The Justice advised the DC to help the two minor girls and ensure that they continue their education under any circumstances.

In line with the issue of drug abuse, Pashel Yumas Anal, chief of Chandil Khullen said that there is not a single drug de-addiction centre in Chandel and asked for proper recommendation of MHRC on the matter.

It is worth noting that the MHRC team interacted with Muslim communities at Sora and Lilong on their way back to Imphal from Chandel district.
