PM likely to visit Manipur next month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Manipur next month (September), which if it turns out, will be his first visit to the State after the place went up in flames on May 3, 2023 .
Sources close to the matter indicated that the Prime Minister may visit Imphal in the second week of September, although the plans remain tentative.
According to these sources, the law and order situation in Manipur is being closely monitored by Delhi, which may influence the Prime Minister's visit.
The visit seems likely if the situation remains stable, but it may be cancelled if conditions worsen, they said.
These sources further indicated that the Prime Minister may announce an extension of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement and the resumption of free movement on National Highways either before visiting Manipur or after arriving here.

They said that the Ministry of Home Affairs officials are currently working to facilitate free movement along the National Highways and extend the SoO agreement.
The sources added that the Prime Minister's potential visit to Manipur might be cancelled if issues arise regarding the extension of the SoO agreement and the resumption of free movement on highways.
The Manipur Government's Commissioner (Home) has flown to New Delhi today in connection with the Prime Minister's potential visit.
The Commissioner (Home), who departed Imphal around 3 pm today, is reportedly set to discuss the situation in Manipur with MHA officials in New Delhi, including potential initiatives the Prime Minister could undertake in the State.
The Governor's administration is also preparing for the Prime Minister's potential visit, with plans to have him inaugurate completed projects and launch other initiatives in Manipur, these sources added.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Mizoram and Assam on September 13 and 14, the sources said, adding that Manipur might also be included in his North East trip.
The sources went on to say that the Prime Minister might announce projects for Manipur not less than Rs 10,000 crore apart from holding talks with stakeholders concerned to resolve the crisis.
According to these sources, the Kukis may urge the Prime Minister to consider their proposal for a dedicated road corridor connecting the hill areas of the State.
The Meiteis have been demanding free movement along National Highways and resettlement of displaced people among other things.
