Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, Director General of Assam Rifles, has stated that the Indo-Myanmar border fencing is progressing with Assam Rifles maintaining a high state of alertness and added that approximately 42,000 illegal immigrants have entered since December last year.
Identity cards have been issued to them after capturing their biometrics, added the DG AR.
The biometrics have been shared to other agencies concerned including UIDAI which is responsible for generating Aadhaar cards.
He made the statement during an interaction programme held at the VC Court Hall of Manipur University today.
Responding to a media query at the function, the DG informed that the Government of India is moving forward with fencing the Indo-Myanmar border and bolstering security measures.
Saying that over 20 Battalions of Assam Rifles are deployed along IndoMyanmar border, he sought cooperation from the people in the endeavours of the Government.

The interaction programme was organised by Assam Rifles and Manipur University under the topic "Geo-Political Developments in Myanmar & Its Impact on the Indo-Myan-mar Border, with Special Reference to Manipur" .
Dr Om Prakash Das, Research Fellow at the South East Asia and Oceania Centre, Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA), New Delhi, offered a nuanced analysis of evolving dynamics in the region and their implications for border security and socio-political stability, said a statement issued by IGAR (S).
The event was conducted under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Assam Rifles and Manipur University in 2021, which continues to serve as a platform for joint research and dialogue on regional security and socio-cultural issues in North East India, it said and added that this partnership has enabled meaningful deliberations and knowledge exchange between academia and security forces.
Among the distinguished attendees were Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof N Lokendra Singh, Security Advisor Kudiep Singh, retired Lieutenant General Dr K Himalay and Inspector General of Assam Rifles Major General Ravroop Singh.
