Moirang, July 19 2025:
Internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying at a relief camp at Torbung staged a sit-in-protest today demanding proper compensation and a rehabilitation package.
During the protest demonstration at the Phougakchao Ikhai Community Hall relief camp, under Torbung Gram Panchayat, the IDPs said they can't agree to the Governor's proposal of Rs 3 lakh rehabilitation package.
"We want the rehabilitation package that was offered and promised by the former Government," said IDPs.
The popular Government before President's Rule had then promised to compensate and assist the IDPs repair and reconstruct their houses.
Hence, they must be given what was promised.
"We will not agree to anything less than what was promised," said the IDPs.
A woman IDP said that the then Government had promised and fixed compensation and assistance packages based on the type of houses and damage.
"We had high hopes that the President Rule Government would keep the promise and even do more for the return of the IDPs to their original homes and their rehabilitation.
However, the decision to provide only Rs 3 lakh per household for rehabilitation is highly condemnable," said the woman.
This arrangement (Rs 3 lakh per household) that has been made by the Governor and authorities concerned is against the interest of the people, and has mocked the IDPs, she added.
The displaced people of Koutruk, Sinam Kom, Na-pat, Tangjeng, Torbung, Phougakchao, Kadangband and other places have suffered since May 3, 2023 .
Lost everything to the conflict and displaced, the IDPs have no feasible avenue to earn income and are struggling to send their children to schools.
The Governor ought to carefully reconsider the plight of the displaced people and address their grievances, she said.
All the due compensations must be given to the IDPs within 2-3 months, she added.
In case the Governor and the authorities concerned fail to address the grievances of the IDPs, the people along with the civil society organisations may launch an intense agitation, said the IDPs .
