Trust building necessary for peace, normalcy: Sangma

While Manipur needs a popular Government, there must be trust-building measures including dialogues between all stakeholders to restore complete normalcy and peace, National People's Party (NPP) president and Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma said in Imphal today.
Sangma, who is on a 2-day visit to the State, reached Imphal at noon.
After reaching Imphal, he met representatives of civil society organisations of the Naga and Meitei communities separately at Classic Grande, Imphal.
Sangma landed at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport from Guwahati at 12.45 pm.
He was accompanied by NPP general secretary (organisation) Paknga Bage, the party's National secretary Saidul Khan, its youth front's National president Nickey Nongkhlaw and NPP Manipur State working president MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan.

NPP Manipur State president and former Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, MLAs-Kh Loken, M Rameshwar, Th Shanti and other party leaders received him at the airport.
Answering to queries of the reporters after landing, Sangma said what Manipur needs at present is trust building measures for conflicting parties to reconcile.
For peace and normalcy to return to Manipur leaders and representatives of communities, civil society organisations and all stakeholders must come together and hold dialogues to build trust, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said.
Sangma said the purpose of his 2-day visit to Manipur is to meet the people and understand their aspirations for peace and normalcy to be restored.
The NPP leader said he will meet representatives of different communities, civil society organisations, and all other stakeholders.
The party will welcome suggestions from the people and stakeholders and act on them to restore peace, he added.
The NPP, as a party, has been working towards bringing peace and normalcy in Manipur, Sangma said.
While peace and normalcy must be restored in Manipur, the State also needs a popular form of Government, he added.
In a democracy, there must be a popular Government of the people.
Democracy will have its true meaning only when there is a Government elected by the people, Sangma said.
Sangma said he will meet the party MLAs and leaders here to discuss the role NPP could play to restore peace and normalcy.
The NPP's stand in case a popular Government is formed will also be discussed besides strategies to strengthen the party, he added.
When asked about the NPP's status in view of the 2027 elections, Sangma said the party is gaining its strength in Manipur with the love of the people.
The NPP in Manipur is very well organised, and it will be able to serve the people sincerely, he added.
Speaking to the reporters, NPP Manipur State president, Y Joykumar said improving law and order situation and bringing about normalcy and peace is required before a popular Government is formed in Manipur.
The BJP MLAs are putting pressure on their Central leaders to form a popular Government.
Whether it will be formed early or not is for them to decide.
The NPP will welcome formation of a popular Government, he said.
From the airport, Conrad K Sangma reached the Classic Grande, where he met with representatives of Naga and Meitei civil society organisations separately.
Sangma met with representatives of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCs) and Imagi Meira.
Separately, he met with representatives of the United Naga Council (UNC) and All Naga Students' Association Manipur (ANSAM).
Later, Sangma met internally displaced persons from Moreh, Churachandpur and other places at Classic Grande.
In the evening at around 5.30, Sangma, accompanied by Y Joykumar and former MP Dr Lorho S Pfoze, visited the Raj Bhavan and called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
The two sides discussed the current situation in Manipur.
Y Joykumar submitted a memorandum to the Governor urging him to restore peace, open highways, give priority to rehabilitation of IDPs, identify and deport illegal immigrants from Myanmar, crackdown on reported extortion from police personnel by Kuki militants and to hold elections to local bodies.
In the evening at 7, Conrad met party MLAs, leaders and workers at the Classic Hotel.
The meeting discussed strategies to improve and strengthen the party before the 2027 elections.
Tomorrow at 9.30 am, Conrad will hold a press conference at the Classic Grande.
Later in the day, he will visit Kangpokpi and meet with representatives of Kuki civil society organisations and IDPs .
