Imphal, October 14 2023:
In a strongly worded statement, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has said that the demand for separate administration must be dropped for any peace process to take shape in violence-torn Manipur.
The UCM was quite categoric in making the statement while offering tarpon to the 18 bravehearts who laid down their lives in the June 18 incidents to save the unity and integrity of Manipur at Kekrupat today.
At the ceremony, UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam said that the demand of a section of Kukis to disintegrate Manipur is absurd and it will never happen.

How can foreigners establish their homeland by breaking apart the State, he asked and added that UCM will always stand against every entity which threatens the integrity of the State and teach them a befitting lesson.
What the UCM aspires is peaceful co-existence and collective development of all communities, big and small, Joychandra maintained and continued that the demand of the 10 Kuki MLAs for disintegration of the State amid the ongoing clash with Kuki narco-terrorists is absurd and illogical.
It is the demand of these 10 MLAs which fuels the violence to linger on for months and causing untold misery to the people, he claimed.
The Government should disqualify all these Kuki MLAs as soon as possible, the UCM president.
People will assume that the Government supports the demand of separate administration if the Kuki MLAs are not disqualified, he contended.
Claiming that some from among the Kuki populace contacted them to begin a peace process, Joychandra asserted that the demand for separate administration must be dropped immediately if the peace process is to be given priority.
Joychandra went on to state that a collective effort is needed to do away with poppy plantations and encroachment into forest areas in Manipur.
Moreover, the UCM president said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) should be updated with respect to Manipur in order to identify illegal immigrants.
UCM will take part in the peace process only after there is some consensus to check poppy plantations, encroachment, illegal immigration and the demand of separate administration is dropped, he said.
Saying that there is no respite in gun violence as yet, he asked how any peace process can be initiated without ending the violent campaign of the Kuki militants first.
There are places where the rehabilitation process can begin and also there are places which are hostile and unfavourable for resettlement, Joychandra continued and asked the Government to hold threadbare discussions before beginning any rehabilitation process to save lives.
The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) and Manipur Women Federation (MWF) also offered tarpon to all the martyrs who laid their lives to protect Manipur during a simple ceremony held at Haying Khongban Uphong Yumpham at the premises of 1st MR .
