MPP, DPP reiterate unity call

Imphal, January 18: The opposition Manipur Peoples' Party and ruling SPF alliance partner Democratic Peoples' Party have cautioned the Government of India against adopting measures detrimental to the interest of the people of Manipur.

MPP president and MLA O Joy Singh and party legislature leader Dr Nimaichand Luwang addressing media persons at the party office today said Government of India should accord maximum respect to the State Assembly resolution oh territorial integrity of Manipur.

Contending that in a democratic country resolutions passed by the Assembly should not be ignored and instead accorded highest esteem, the two leaders said no attempt should be made to distort the State boundary as fallout of the peace talks between Government of India and the NSCN (IM).

They also iterated that territory of Manipur should be safeguarded by all the communities living together since ages and called upon the people to refrain from derogatory remarks against other community while protesting the designs of Central leaders to Balkanise Manipur.

On the other hand, DPP president Khaidem Mani demanded immediate dropping of any agenda likely to pose threat to the territorial integrity of Manipur during the talks between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM).

A decision to this effect-was taken after a detailed discussion by party's central committee during a meeting, he said.

The DPP will also declare its stance on January 20 regarding measures to be pursued in case the talks figure agendas against the interest of the Manipuri people.

To reassure the people of Manipur that its boundary will not be disturbed, Mani demanded amendment of Article 3 of the Indian Constitution.

The status of Manipur as of pre-merger agreement should be respected and safeguarded.

People should also be consulted if Govt of India decides to impose President Rule in the State, the DPP leader demanded.

On the campaign to protect the territory of Manipur, Mani said all organizations should pursue a common agenda and desist from making communal remarks against others.
