E Kunjeshore Memorial Chess tourney : Y Shankar comes up tops to bag title

Y Shankar beat 43 other contenders to emerge the champ in the Elangbam Kunjeshore Memorial Chess Tournament, organised by the Elangbam Suraj Singh Memorial Trust at Lizard Community hall today.
Commissioner of YAS, RK Nimai, Chairperson of Imphal Municipal Council A Nimai attended the closing function as chief guest and president respectively while Ksh Gopendro president of Lizard Library, Ch Shyamjai president of Manipur Cricket Association, H Dijen Singh (Retd DI of School) were the guests of honour and took turns to distribute the prizes to the winners.
Played in seven rounds, Y Shankar got the better of the other 43 contenders scoring a total of 18 points to emerge the champion.
N Bankim followed closely with 17 points to bag the second spot while L Atembi and young, chess prodigy Kh Sanjoy followed suit to jointly occupy the third position with 16 points apiece.
Though N Boiboicha and Ronald were tied at 15 points each, N Boiboicha bagged the fifth spot on account of progressive score.
The others who made it to the podium finish were N Koireng who finished at the 7th position, RK Appollosana who bagged the 8th position, S Samson who came in at the 9th spot and Kh Merajao who finished 10th.The tournament kicked off from February 6 and on the final day today, Y Shankar and N Boiboicha who were tied at 15 points each played the last match of the tournament today.
Y Shankar managed to keep his cool and outplayed N Boiboicha to bag full points and emerge the champion with 18 points.
