Imphal, February 09 2014:
While most cases of crime against women and children committed by men are under the influence of intoxicating substances sporadic incidents of women committing atrocities against women is very disturbing trend, expressed Director of Prosecution Ngangom Tejkumar at an awareness programme on 'Crime against women & women empowerment' .
The programme held today at the Kuranga Nayani Hall in Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West district office complex was graced by Imphal West Adhyaksha Yumnam Dashumati Devi, Up-adhyaksha Th Saratchandra Singh and Zilla Parishad (IW) Chief Executive Officer S Rajendra Singh as the chief guest, president and guest of honour of the inaugural programme.
Commenting on the programme theme as a resource person, Tejkumar said degree of brutality suffered by a victim is more severe if the perpetrator is under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of committing the crime.
Stressing on the need for concerted effort by all sections of the society, particularly NGOs, to tackle crime against women, he pointed out until and unless women have equal right as men there cannot be a progressive society.
Conveying that Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 was specifically constituted to safeguard women from all forms of violence, Tejkumar said victims of violence could avail services of free legal aid clinic opened at all districts of Manipur to pull up the rogue men and women and ensure they too suffer, legally, for their inhumane conduct.
Besides substance abuse, mobile phones and restaurants are some modern amenities whose unethical usage/application have been the genesis of many acts of crime against women, said the Director of Prosecution while seriously lamenting that even physically challenged girls are not spared by individuals with criminal mindset.
While Ng Tejkumar was elaborating on 'Crimes against women and drug abuse', another resource person advocate B Supriya Devi deliberated on 'Women & domestic violence' .
