Imphal, June 21 2016:
Sudden and forceful ejection of stinky water from the sewerage pipeline on the street with the loud sounds of manholes bursting created a panicky situation on RIMS road this afternoon.
People ran helter-skelter for a few minutes, as the accumulated gas inside the sewerage pipeline violently pushed up the manholes with stinky waters spilling all over on the road.
The shopkeepers hurriedly pulled down the shutters of their shops amidst traffic snarls created by sudden blocking of roads.
An eye witness said that he heard a loud sound and saw sewage spilling out of a manhole located near Apunba Fitness Centre on RIMS road at around 2.30 pm.

He said that he saw ejection of gas from the manholes before spilling out of water that continued for around 30 minutes.
People tried to move out from these three locations in a hurry as they thought that the gases and sewage might be harmful to health.
Some people even complained of experiencing headache after they were exposed to the gases coming out from the manholes.
As flowing of large amount of sewage on the road blocked traffic movement, traffic police were immediately called to the area to regulate movement of vehicles .
Later, traffic police arrived at the area and diverted the vehicles to alternate routes.
It may be mentioned that execution of works for French Government funded Imphal Sewerage Project began soon after Chief Minister Okram Ibobi assumed office around 14 years ago.
However, the project is yet to be commissioned.
Digging of roads for the project created lots of inconvenience to the public for many years.
Some time back, Thangmeiband locals staged protest after the Government failed to revamp some roads which became dilapidated due to digging of earth for the project.
