Imphal, August 16 2026:
Sending a clear message that they are not happy with how the Government has been treating them, a large number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) staged protest demonstrations with black flags on
August 15 .
Saying that the Independence Day of India has turned out to be a dark day for the IDPs, many of them staged protest demonstrations, took out rallies and shouted slogans.
The protest demonstrations were organised by the Apex Committee of Meitei IDPs Manipur under the aegis of COCOMI .
Holding black flags and placards which read as "We want your home to celebrate your Har Ghar Tiranga", "Your freedom, our cries", "Har Ghar Tiranga Your pride, our loss", "Your peace, our pain", "Stranger no more, this is our home" etc, IDPs taking refuge at Akampat relief camp took out a protest rally around the Akampat area.
They also shouted slogans like "Let IDPs go back home", "Let IDPs celebrate Har Ghar Tiranga at their homes', "Let us celebrate the Independence Day at our homes" etc .
One of the IDPs said that they should not be viewed as anti-India just because of their protest.
"Like other citizens, we too would like to celebrate the Independence Day and take part in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign but we have been living in relief camps for too long and we can no longer survive on the meagre aid given by the Government.
"We are only requesting the Government to save us from this desperate situation and let us resettle at our homes", he said.
Similar sit-in-protest and protest rallies were taken out at different relief camps.
Protest demonstrations with black flags were also held at Alternate Housing Complex relief camp, Langol; Kodompokpi relief camp, Wangjing; Lamding Higher Secondary School relief camp, Wangjing; Sajiwa relief camp, Kumbi Leirak Achouba relief camp, Old DC complex Loukoipat relief camp, Leishemba Shanglen Wangoo Sabal relief camp, Kumbi Terakha Upper Primary School relief camp, Moirang College relief camp, Leimaram SC girls hostel relief camp, Kamakhya Pemton College Hiyangthang relief camp, Moirang Khunou Mamang Sabal Mandop relief camp, Konthoujam Makha Khabam High School relief camp and different relief camps opened in Bishnupur district.
