Imphal, August 16 2026:
The Meitei Society Churachandpur (MSC) has expressed concern over the alleged omission of issues concerning internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand's Independence Day speech.
In a press release, the MSC said IDPs could not physically attend the State-level Independence Day celebration at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground but were able to watch the programme through electronic media.
While acknowledging the Chief Minister's speech as dignified and inspiring, the Meitei Society said no mention, however, was made of the hardships faced by IDPs due to the crisis in Manipur.
The Meitei Society said the speech failed to address the suffering of IDPs currently living in relief camps, the plan to resettle them in their original homes, the "meagre" ration allowance being provided to them, and their welfare, particularly in terms of education and healthcare.
It said the absence of such references has created anxiety among IDPs over whether the Government had forgotten them.
"For what crime are we being made to live separately, not allowed to meet or interact with each other, and given the tag of IDPs by the Government of India and the Government of Manipur," the statement asked.
It further criticised the amount of daily ration assistance being provided to IDPs, saying the limited support had created an impression that they might not receive further assistance even after the ongoing crisis ends.
Stressing that IDPs should be fully included in the process of building "Viksit Bharat" and "Viksit Manipur", the Meitei Society urged Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to clarify the Government's position on the issues.
