Imphal streets flooded, no respite for 3 more days

Imphal, October 08 2010: In view of the persistent depression in the Bay of Bengal, there would be medium rainfall in Manipur for the next three days.

According to information received from Meteorology Department, satellite pictures show low pressure transforming into depression the in Bay of Bengal in the last few days.

This depression is approaching the eastern coastal region including Orissa.

In case the depression does not improve in the coming days, it would cause cyclone in the adjoining regions, said sources.

However, analysis of the present condition does not show any indication of the possibility of cyclone though it would cause medium rainfall for a few more days.

As such, it is very likely that the rainfall in Manipur would continue for three more days.

Rainfall on Wednesday was 3.6 ml.

This rose to 53.7 on Thursday.

Till now, rainfall for today has been recorded to be 33.8 ml, said a source in the Meteorology Department.Consequent upon the incessant rainfall for the last few days, many roads and lanes of Imphal area have been inundated.

In some low-lying areas, even courtyards have been flooded with water overflowing drains and canals.

Any further medium to heavy rainfall would indundate many dwelling houses in these low lying areas.

A random survey conducted by The Sangai Express on the impacts of the incessant rainfall found water inundating many roads and lanes.

In many areas, even courtyards up to the level of verandah were found flooded.

Most of the lanes and roads in Sagolband area have been flooded.

The water level was found one foot deep on many of these roads.

Drains in Sagolband Meino Leirak are overflowing.

These overflowing water are gushing towards dwelling houses.

With drainage system either blocked or overflowing, the road near Jas Gas of Uripok-Kangchup line has been flooded.

Many other lanes of Uripok area have been inundated.

Even as water level in Lamphelpat area is not threatening at the moment, the local people who have endured a devastating flood a few months back are apprehensive of a second deluge in case the rainfall continues unabated.

As of now, water levels of most of the rivers of the State have not reached any alarming level.
