Imphal, October 08 2010:
With Kasom Khullen sub-division of Ukhrul district remaining cut off from the rest of the world for over 20 days on account of the deplorable road condition, villagers who used to depend on this road for everything today face the grim prospect and ignominy of starvation.
Informing this during a press conference at Maringlane here today, chairman of Kasom Khullen Sub-Division Development Association, Jojo Robertson categorically stated that the Government and its related Departments should be held solely responsible for any possible death from starvation.
He lamented that despite the Kasom Khullen road being declared a State highway, the Government and its related authorities have done nothing to improve the condition of the road.
Numerous memoranda have been submitted in the past appealing for improving the condition of the road but no response have been forthcoming.
He informed that with the condition of the road deteriorating to an abysmal level, no vehicles have been able to ply for more than 20 days now.
As a result, Kasom Khullen sub-division has remained cut off from the rest of the world and transportation of essential commodities for the people stopped.
Jojo further announced that taking into consideration the urgent need to improve the condition of the road, the Association with the support of the people would start repairing the road with effect from tomorrow.
He demanded that the expenses of repairing the road should be refunded by the Government and its related departments.
Informing that the newly constructed building of the Primary Health Centre at Kasom Khullen is due to be inaugurated on October 16, he also appealed to the Health Minister and other officials concerned to ensure their participation in the inaugural function.
Headman of Kangkum village S Peter and headman of Kashung village T Shimreiphang were also present during the press conference.
