Imphal, August 24 2010:
Given the slow pace of work with regard to phumdi (floating biomass) clearance from Loktak, the largest fresh water lake in North East India, under the supervision of K Pro Infra Works, it is unlikely that the project can be completed within the stipulated time.
Making a spot assessment of the phumdi clearance work being done with machines and manually today, together with officials of K Pro Infra Works and LDA today, LDA Project Director Th Ibobi said that looking at the current pace of executing the project, it is unlikely that the project can be completed within the stipulated deadline which is March, 2012 .

The company is using 19 excavators and 15 tippers after hiring them from the LDA.
However, if the efforts of the company to procure other requisite machinery is realised shortly, perhaps the project can be completed within the stipulated period, Ibobi said.
Since the company began phumdi clearance work on January 6 this year, 7.57 lakh cubic metres of phumdi have been cut both with machines till August 15 this year.
During the same period, 12.8 lakh cubic metres of phumdi have been cut manually and pushed down river.
However, phumdi restoration work has not yet begun, the LDA Project Director said.
Project Director of K Pro Infra Works Cheeranjivi said that phumdi clearance work was suspended for about three months due to unavailability of fuel oils consequent upon prolonged blockades on National Highways.
At least, three full loads of oil-tankers are required for running the machinery in a fortnight.
The company has been clearing phumdi in eight different areas of Loktak lake while at two other places phumdis were being cleared manually which were later pushed down Khordak and Ungamen rivers.
Even as the volume of the works demanded 35 excavators and 60 tippers, only 26 excavators and 35 tippers are engaged at present.
The company has made orders to procure more excavators and tippers which remain short.
For clearing phumdis manually, 327 labourers are being engaged.
The media team which also accompanied the inspection team saw phumdis being piled in private firms adjacent to Loktak lake at Komlakhong aide after the phumdis were cut and brought up with machines.
The media persons also saw cut off phumdis being pushed down Ithai Barrage.
