Training programme on "Aquarium making and Ornamental fish fanning" conducted

The Directorate of Extension Education, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal has conductedaoneday training programme on "Aquarium making and Ornamental fish farming" today at Khukthar Village of Chandel District for women fish farmers.
The training was conducted as a part of the DST WOS (B) scheme funded by the WISE-KIRAN Division of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The project focuses to uplift the socio economic status of the women fish farmers of Manipur by training and empowering them to engage themselves in ornamental fish farming, backyard fish farming, aquarium construction and other related fisheries activities.
The programme was graced by the Director of Extension Education, CAU Imphal, Professor Ph Ranjit Sharma.
While addressing the gathering, he emphasized on the importance and prospect of ornamental fish farming industry in North East especially in Manipur and also encouraged the trainees to take up aquarium making and ornamental fish culture as a business activity to boost the economic status of the farmers by generating income through such activities.
K Jenishing Tarao, DFO, Chandel District and Dr M A Salam, SMS (Fisheries), KVK, Imphal East, CAU Imphal, also extended their valuable knowledge to the trainees on the subject and even advised the participants to challenge themselves to make their own aquariums at their homes with the practical knowledge gained in the training.
Rev Pheliboy Roel, Pastor of Khukthar Village also expressed gratitude to the Directorate of Extension Education, CAU for conducting such a training programme in their village and mentioned that it was one of the first training programmes conducted in Chandel District on such a topic.
A total of 33 women fish farmers from seven different villages of Chandel and Tengnoupal districts participated in the programme.
Practical classes on aquarium making and setting up of the aquarium was also conducted by Dr Wanglar Chimwar, Principal Investigator (PI) of the DST WOS (B) scheme, M Wartung Monsang (Small aquarium business owner) and Laishram Soniya Devi (Project Assistant, DBT).
Inputs were distributed in the form of glass aquariums and accessories such as aerators and filters, ornamental fishes (Japanese koi fish) were distributed to the participants.
