Imphal, June 18 2020:
"The decision of titular king of Manipur Leisemba Sanajaoba to contest the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Manipur as a BJP candidate is highly condemnable," stated the proscribed Manipur Naga People's Front in a statement signed by its secretary publicity Thomas Numai.
MNPF said though Manipur has joined the Indian Union, all the King's responsibilities in traditions, customs and rituals for the people of the State are all vested in the King.
It also reminded that in 2013, O Ibobi and his Cabinet approved a decision to take over the Palace of the King to make it a museum.
"That move of the State Govt was protested by the King himself and he launched a hunger strike.
Many village chiefs of the hill came and protested too.
The Tangkhul tribe alone was represented by chiefs of more than 220 villages.
"The move of the then Congress Govt to erase the history of Manipur was thus neutralised by the people of Manipur both from the hill and valley under the leadership of the King of Manipur.
"If Leisemba Sanajaoba does not understand his position as the King of Manipur it would be a great blunder for the entire people of Manipur.
"The policy of the Indian Government in naming the King of Manipur as a candidate for the MP seat as a BJP candidate is a process of political desensitisation," added the outfit.
