Imphal, October 17 2013:
Registering its objection to the Govt's move to acquire 74.1715 acres of paddy fields at Heingang village in Imphal East for establishment of Manipuri Pony Sanctuary, the Committee on the Protection of Agriculture Land, Heingang has insisted the Chief Minister to cancel the Govt order for acquisition of agricultural land by State Government at Heingang.
The President and Secretary of Committee on the Protection of Agriculture land, Heingang have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this
regard today.
The memo said that as per an order issued on August 30, the State Govt has decided to acquire 74.1715 acres of paddy fields at Heingang village in Imphal East for establishment of Manipuri Pony Sanctuary.
Pointing out that the paddy fields were allotted by the then president of Manipur State Darbar on April 20, 1943 to the peasants of Heingang village for cultivation of paddy crop which is the main staple food of the people, the memo asserted that the area has become one of the most productive paddy fields in the State.
Since most of the inhabitants of the village are peasants, depending mainly on their agriculture produces, the acquisition of the paddy field by the Govt would amount to depriving the poor peasants of their rights to occupation and job and consequently to their means of livelihood.
Deprivation of the most productive paddy fields would be a mockery in the light of the Central Government policy of introducing Food Security Act for the benefit of poorer section of the people, it pointed out.
