Imphal, October 17 2013:
Contending that past instances of leniency against individuals convicted in rape cases is the primary reason for continuous crime against women and children, the joint action committee (JAC) formed in connection with the rape of a differently abled girl at Tangkham Awang leikai has demanded that the accused person, currently in police, custody be sentenced to death.
Strongly condemning the inhuman act of raping a 23-year old mentally challenged girl at her own home by a man from the same locality, JAC secretary Ksh Kulabati Leima appealing to all concerned for necessary support in punishing the accused person also threatened to launch intense agitation against the Government if there is any sign of leniency against the accused.
Speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today, Kulabati said the local women organisations (meira paibi) were informed about the rape case on october 13, two days after the crime was committed.
The same day (Oct 13) an emergency meeting of meira paibis from Sambei, Chingkhu, Tangkham and Khundrakpam areas was held at Kalika Lairembi Mandop, Tangkham wherein decision was taken to form the JAC and pursue the case so that the culprit do not escape befitting punishment.
Expressing serious concern about increase in crime against women and children in the State, the secretary reiterated the clarion call to NGOs and women activists for maintaining strict vigil to ensure that such unwanted incidents do not recur.
As reported, Laishram Joykumar (41) of Kangabam Tangkham Awang Leikai, a married man, has been arrested in connection with the rape of the mentally challenged girl.
