Imphal, October 17 2013:
Indian Council for Agriculture Research for NE Hill Region and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Churachandpur have jointly organised Seed Day today at Vajing village in Churachandpur district.
Speaking at the occasion, Principal Scientist of ICAR, Dr IM Singh exhorted the gatherings to produce quality seeds of crops which can be used in the long term instead of relying on imported seeds for cultivation.
The village farmers, in collaboration with ICAR and KVK Churachandpur, have cultivated the ICAR developed RCM-10 paddy.
The produces when harvested would be stored for use as seeds in the next season.
The Seed Day programme held under the Tribal Sub-Plan was attended among others by Programme Coordinator of KVK Churachandpur, W Rajen Singh and Vajing VA Chairman Semjakam.
Crop seeds like M-27 (mustard) were distributed to the participant farmers of the programme.
ICAR experts have also inspected the quality seed production fields of Vajing village as part of the programme.
The presence of weeds was detected among the RCM-10 variety of paddy being cultivated in the Vajing fields.
The need to separate the weeds from the paddy plants at an early stage was highlighted to the farmers.
